On Sunday, the Los Angeles Times alleged that Richard Montañez-the man who says he dreamed up the spicy snack and has parlayed his story into a film set to be directed by Eva Longoria-did not actually invent the Flamin’ Hot Cheeto.Īccording to the Times, Montañez-who began his career at Frito-Lay as a plant worker-has utilized his natural charisma and personality to spin his rags-to-riches tale into a lucrative second career. “And some of those things people may glaze over and not really realize, but the rhythm of the language, the culture of our spice and our food, the way we dress, those things mattered.If you thought you knew who invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, think again. The salsa verde goes on this taco,” Longoria said. “I know we put Tapatío on our spaghetti - that’s just something my dad does. I was like, ‘This is my superpower.’ I know this world. “So when I approached the movie, whether it was crewing up or casting, authenticity was my North Star. “I really felt like I was the only person who could tell this story because I am Chicana, because I am from the Mexican American community, because I understood the struggles that the family faced and that our community faces,” she said.
